About Justine

I pursued art at university but diverted into the botanical world, studying and working in the horticultural field for nearly 20 years. This experience has greatly influenced my artistic practice, which is deeply connected to nature.

My curiosity often leads me off the beaten path—both in my creative process and in life. These moments of exploration are where I find the most meaningful discoveries.

A teacher once said to me, “Once you start looking, you never stop seeing”  I love this lesson, and I always stop to look, see and watch.

Where it all Began

Clay has fascinated me since I was a child. I’d dig it from the ground, shape it into little sculptures, and place them in the potbelly stove. Sometimes, they’d pop and crack, but I’d wait for the glowing stove to cool, eager to sift through the ashes and see what remained. I still have a few of those pieces—a little reminder of where it all began.

  • Hand Cut and Made

I hand-cut stencils from various materials for image-making. I apply coloured slips or underglaze monoprints, then mask and overlay additional stencils and slips. The process ends in the reveal—a stage that captivates me, as even with careful planning, the outcome remains an exciting surprise.

    Glazing

All unglazed surfaces are treated with Australian-designed Liquid Quartz. The treatment is food—and dishwasher-safe; however, I recommend handwashing, as some discolouration may occur in the dishwasher.

  • Natural Elements

Woven additions can be made from locally gathered materials or hand-dyed raffia. They will have natural variations in appearance.

I source locally gathered grasses and hand-dyed raffia for woven additions, selecting only durable, natural fibres that resist mildew and insects. This adds a natural, earthy touch to selected pieces.
